Interactive roaming (literally) street theatre
Somewhat new to the whole blogging thing but I’m using this as an opportunity to archive some of the huge variety shows, festivals, performances and events I have worked on. So let’s take a trip down memory lane…(cue wavy lines as we fade into our first memory)
December 2005…I’ve once more packed up my life this time moving to Melbourne to start FEET Theatre we performed participatory theatre with themes focusing on environmental and social issues. Our main show was the absurdly humorous street theatre experience, “The Feetbus”, designed for outdoor festivals. Passengers were welcomed aboard the 6m long wheel-less, engineless, feet-powered bus where social cohesion and play were needed to propel the vehicle forward.
In just over a year my business partner Tim and I took the bus around the world to Romania, the UK, Austria, Hungary, France and back to Australia, developing the crazy world on board the Feetbus. Our mad journey saw us transporting 8 bags full of props, on and off trains, buses and vans, through torrential rain and heat waves, meeting amazing people and seeing some of the best street theatre in the world.
FEET Theatre also produced a number of fire shows and ritual theatre events, including ‘The Temple’ at Knockengorroch in 2008.
As the co-director and creative producer of FEET, I was involved from its conception, developing a business & marketing plan, website, working policies etc. to its growth, devising shows, managing gigs and organizing a European tour in 2006. The company sadly ended in 2009. The last bus was destroyed by excited fans at the Falls Festival in Tasmania that year…the scene of a similar incident the year before.
